Srinagar, Dec 07-09: Setting at rest various speculations about the cause of injury inflicted on Hurriyat (M) executive member Fazl Haq Qureshi, doctors at SKIMS Monday disclosed that a ‘missile’ ( actually a high velocity flying object  ) had  hit the leader on his head.

“High velocity flying object with at least 1000 mtrs per second speed has hit the leader. We call it a missile in our language. Hammer or any other blunt object cannot do what the patient has gone through. Hammer story is incorrect according to the clinical examinations,” said Dr Abdul Rashid Bhat, consultant in neurosurgery at SKIMS, who was part of the team that operated upon Qureshi.

According to the statistics, the Neurosurgery Department at SKIMS has operated upon 3794 bullet injury cases in last 20 years, making it largest series in the world. During the Vietnam War, only 2185 such cases were reported.

“The missile (bullet) has caused radial and axial injury and the secondary missiles have gone inside the brain. The bone, air and blood have also gone inside the brain, damaging it severely,” said Dr Bhat.

According to him, Qureshi is not in a state of communication and not recognizing anybody. “He is still in danger for next three days. And if he suffers from fever, that will add to problems,” he said.

About the recovery of such patients as per the medical history, Dr Bhat said, “Out of 3794 such cases at SKIMS, 3100 have died. Among those who survived, only 5 percent have good recovery.”

Talking to Rising Kashmir, Medical Superintendent SKIMS Dr Syed Amin Tabish said: “We have put him off the ventilator for some time. He was on oxygen mask and he made an effort to breathe. But it is not that significant.”

Dr Bhat said putting him off the ventilator is a compulsion for them . “We have to avoid the infection from spreading to thebody parts of the patient”.

According to the doctors, lot of blood has gone into the ventricles of brain and instead of the Cerebro-Spinal fluid, blood is floating inside.

Qureshi was attacked outside the mosque near his residence at Soura Friday evening. Doctors were indecisive about the cause of injury. However, the neighbours of Qureshi said that they heard a gunshot at the time the leader was attacked. risingkashmir
