Muzaffarabad, July 22: A no-confidence motion was moved against Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed in the legislative assembly on Monday, seeking his removal from the office.

The resolution was moved by ruling PPP members Muhammad Hussain and Abdul Majid Khan. They proposed the name of Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, who also belongs to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), as alternative leader of the House.

six ministers and advisors have resigned from their posts. The estranged members have alleged the incumbent prime minister that he has put the Kashmir issue on back burner.

Under the constitution, speaker of the legislative assembly should summon assembly session within three to seven days to debate and vote on the move.

If passed, it is likely that PPP leader Barrister Sultan Mahmoud will be elected as new prime minister.

Chaudhry Abdul Majeed of the ruling PPP was elected in 2011 as the eleventh AJK prime minister.

Majeed, who was nominated by President Asif Ali Zardari for the premiership, was elected in the June 26 election from a constituency in the Mirpur district.

Political commentators said that Chaudhry Abdul Majeed remained strong till the PPP government at the centre but then as usually happens in the politics of Azad Kashmir, political wheeling dealing started by those who were not given ministerial slots.

Insiders say that the movers of the no confidence motion would require the support of PPP(Barrister sultan group), PML-N and Muslim Counference to succeed. An agreement has reportedly been reached between the three groups about sharing the cabinet posts after the success of the motion.

Under the arrangement, Muslim League-N would be given eight Ministers including senior minister post, Muslim Conference would have the posts of speaker and three ministers and the remaining posts would be retained by Barrister Sultan Group.-INP
