Srinagar: Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik called for complete shutdown in Kashmir on Monday, October 19, after one of the truckers, who were recently attacked in Udhampur, died in a Delhi hospital on Sunday.
Zahid Rasool Bhat breathed his last this morning, a family member and hospital sources said. He was admitted at Safdarjung hospital with critical burn injuries after being shifted from a Jammu hospital a week back.
Protest broke out at his native place – Batengoo area of Khanabal – in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district after the news about his death spread. Reports said that thousands of people took to streets and staged protest demonstration demanding severe punishment to the attackers, six of whom are already under police custody which few others, including the kingpin, are absconding.
“Geelani sahib has called for complete Kashmir wide shutdown on Monday against Zahid’s killing,” said spokesperson of Geelani led Hurriyat Conference, Ayaz Akbar.
Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also called for shutdown. “Government has failed to rein in communal forces who are hell bent upon vitiating the atmosphere in the state,” Mirwaiz said.
He blamed the government for death of Zahid. “There is no safety and security for common man in Kashmir,” said Mirwaiz.
A spokesperson of Yasin Malik led Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front condemned the killing of Zahid and recent attacks on Muslims in different parts of India. He appealed people in Kashmir to observe complete shutdown on Monday to register protest.
