Srinagar: Shortly after funeral prayers of Zahid Rasool Bhat held early Monday, strong pro-freedom protests followed by clashes between forces and youth broke out in Batengo village of Islamabad down South Kashmir.
Zahid from South Kashmir’s Batengoo village was charred by goons in Udhampur in the intervening night of September 9-10 early this month. After being hospitalized for many days, Zahid succumbed to his burn injuries yesterday at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.
In face of relentless protests that broke in the area despite restrictions, police and paramilitary had to resort to tear-gas shelling to disperse the protesters.
The Associated Press adds from Srinagar;
A general strike and curfew have shut Indian-controlled Kashmir following the death of a Muslim teenager attacked by a Hindu mob over rumors of cows being slaughtered.
Hindus consider cows to be sacred, and slaughtering the animals is banned in most Indian states.
Rasool died in a New Delhi hospital on Sunday after he and another truck driver were set ablaze by a mob in the Hindu-dominated Udhampur neighborhood.
Police officer Danish Rana said nine people have been arrested in connection with Rasool’s death.
Businesses, schools and shops remained due to the strike called by anti-India separatists and traders to denounce the killing.
