Geelani, Mirwaiz, Malik arrested in Srinagar; Journalists assaulted
Srinagar: Police on Thursday arrested Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (M chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman, Yasin Malik at Hyderpora and foiled their meeting and press conference.
Earlier, Mirwaiz and Malik reached at Geelani’s residence to have a meeting with the octogenarian leader however they were not allowed by police to enter the incarcerated leader’s residence, sources said.
They said that after some minutes Geelani himself came out to receive Mirwaiz and Malik however, police did not allow them to enter.
Police swung into action and arrested the three pro-freedom leaders foiling their meeting and a press conference, sources added.
They said the three leaders were taken to Humhama.
Meanwhile, in a brazen attack on journalists, the Jammu and Kashmir Police Thursday physically assulated reporters and photo-journalists at Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Geelani’s Hyderpora residence-cum-office, who had gone to cover a press briefing of the Hurriyat leaders.
Rising Kashmir has learnt that DO Humhama physically assaulted senior photo-journalists Farooq Javed Khan (European Press Photo Agency), Tauseef Mustafa (AFP), Umar Sheikh (Times Now) and Shauib Masoodi (Indian Express).
Many other reporters were also assaulted by the police who were trying to carry out their professional duties.
The Kashmir media is working under increasing and constant pressure from the state agencies like JK Police and para-military troopers.
