Srinagar, May 17: Over one hundred people including girls were injured during a massive siege and search operation in Shopian district.

Police and Indian troops cordoned off the Heff Shirmal area of the district and started a massive search operation. They barged into the residential houses and thrashed everyone who came in their way. They also vandalized the household goods. Over a hundred people including more than fifty girls sustained injuries in the thrashing.
People took to the streets in the area and staged forceful demonstrations against the military action. Indian Police fired bullets and pellets to disperse the protesters injuring dozens more people. Twenty people with pellet injuries were shifted to different hospitals in Zainapora, Pulwama and Anantnag while one of the critically injured was moved to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students in Srinagar and Hajin areas staged forceful protests against the arrest of students across the Kashmir Valley. They raised high-pitched anti-India and pro-freedom slogans. Police and troops resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesting students, injuring several of them.
