Srinagar: People demonstrated, and clashed with police, at Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district. The protest spread to Achabal Adda and old town localities of Reeshi Bazar.

Protests erupted in Nowgam locality after an elderly woman raised alarm over the entry of two masked men into her house on Saturday.
The duo fled after the woman and other family members raised an alarm. People of the locality demonstrated as they suspected the masked men had entered the house with the intention of cutting women’s hair.

Hair of several young girls and women in many parts of the Valley has been mysteriously found chopped during the past month. These girls and women have told their families and police that unknown persons cut their hair after knocking them unconscious with some spray.
In another incident, police took into custody a woman whom the people took for a braid cutter. Srinagar senior superintendent of police Imtiaz Ismail said the woman was mentally retarded. He said the police were looking into the Nowgam incident.
Hair of a woman, mother of three, from Nihama area of Kulgam district was found cut on Saturday morning. She was treated at a local health centre. In Gretbal- Qaimoh in the same district, braid of an elderly woman was also found chopped off. Most of the incidents of braid cutting have been reported from southern Kashmir.

On Friday, five incidents of braid cutting were reported in Anantnag and Budgam districts.
People in Goplapora- Shangus, Achajipora locality of Anantnag town and Ugjan-Dialgam claimed to have foiled two attempts by suspected persons at braid chopping.
The police have formed Special Investigation Teams to probe the incidents. However, so far the police and the authorities have been clueless.
The police have also announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh for credible information leading to arrest of any person behind braid chopping incidents.
