Srinagar, April 26: IUST Awantipora students protest against forces high-handedness IUST Awantipora students protest against alleged forces high-handedness. The students of Islamic University of Sciences and Technology (IUST) Awantipora on Thursday staged a peaceful protest demonstration against the alleged high-handedness of the government forces. The protesting students who have assembled on the varsity campus said gunshots triggered panic and that they went out of their class rooms to see what was happening.
They alleged that the forces fired several tear gas shells inside the campus, which caused suffocation. Demanding action against the forces, the students said tear gas was fired inside the campus without any provocation.
A varsity official also refuted the media reports that the students pelted the forces with stones. “Normal class work was going on, some gunshots were heard that led to panic and fear among the students and the staff. As students tried to learn what happened, the security forces resorted to teargas and PAVA shelling inside the campus,” he said.
In a statement, Vice Chancellor IUST, Prof Mushtaq Siddiqui said “there was no provocation from the students as the normal classwork was on in the varsity and protests started only after firing incident led to tear gas shelling in the campus.”
However, the police said that the students hurled rocks at the army men fixing telephone lines outside the varsity. The army men, an official said, fired few rounds in the air to chase away the stone-throwing youth.
