Srinagar, April 30: Civilian Shahid Ahmad was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Aarihal Pulwama, amid pro-freedom, pro-Islamic and anti-India slogans. Thousands of mourners including men, women, children and old participated in his funeral procession at his native village in Pulwama.
Shahid was hit by a bullet during clashes near the site of the gunfight in Drabgam village. He was shifted to District Hospital Pulwama where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The gunfight ended with the killing of two militants identified as Sameer Ahmad Bhat alias Tiger of Drubgam and Aqib Ahmad Khan of Rajpora. A weapon was also recovered from the encounter site. The house in which militants were hiding was also sustained a massive damage.
A major and a soldier of 44 RR were injured in the initial exchange of fire with the militants, reports said. The injured were shifted to 92 base military hospitals in Badami Bagh Srinagar.
According to reports Shahid, a die-hard fan of Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi is the only son of his parents and is survived by a sister.
