Srinagar, April 08: A 20-year-old girl was hit by two bullets in the abdomen by the forces inside her house at Nagbal area of South Kashmir’s Shopian. She was in the courtyard of her house when bullets left her in the pool of blood.
Meema, daughter of Ghulam Mohammad Shah, of Nagbal, was among many youngsters who were hit by bullets in south Kashmir areas on Sunday following an encounter at Badigam village during which ten people including five civilians were killed.
“There were no clashes. I was inside the room. My sister went out from the house just to ask Manzoor (our brother) to come inside as he was in the courtyard. She pushed him back and asked him to come inside when suddenly she was hit by two bullets,” Meema’s sister Razia told Rising Kashmir at SMHS, where she remains admitted. She said that the bullets fired by army men pierced through the iron gate of their house and hit Meema’s abdomen due to which she fell down. “If she would not have pushed him, he would have been hit instead of her. It was a target fire,” she said. The incident happened at around 10 am.
Meema was engaged few months back and her family was thinking to marry her this year. According to Razia when her sister was hit she was taken to Shopian hospital where from she was referred to SMHS. “We tried to take her to nearby Zainapora hospital but government forces did not allow our ambulance to go there. Then we took her to Shopian,” she said.
Nagbal is one km from Badigam village and 16 km away from Shopian. She said army had laid a cordon in their village also. “Life has become hell. Forces do not spare women. We are not safe in our homes even. Forces also broke window panes of our house,” she said.
Recounting the Sunday horror, she also said people were targeted with bullets at Nagbal market on Sunday as forces were coming back from the encounter site. Most of the injuries are from there. “Forces did not even allow reporters to reach the area.”
A group of women from Nagbal village gathered at the surgery ward of the hospital to console the family. They said they have been living in a miserable condition.
“We have seen bloodshed but not like this. We would not forget these days especially Sunday. Forces have created a reign of terror in Shopian villages,” a woman said. According to witnesses, all those who were hit by bullets have injuries above the waist signaling their intention was “to kill civilians.”
A medico at SMHS said that Meema was operated for the injury. “The bullets were removed. She has suffered an intestinal rupture. She is recovering and we used a suction pipe to draw out blood,” he said. “Among those hit by bullets, two more have abdominal injuries,” he added.
