5 youth were killed in the firefight on that day
Anantnag: On Saturday morning, Rouf Ahmad asked his mother to keep his tea ready as he left home to assist neighbours in construction of a local mosque.
But by early afternoon Ahmad’s body arrived home, leaving his mother and everyone else in utter shock.
The 22-year-old from Al Farooq colony in Anchidora locality of Anantnag town was killed during protests following a gunfight between militants and government forces in Chowgam village of Devsar in Kulgam, some 20 kilometers away from his home.
Five militants were killed in the firefight on that day.
Ahmad had quit school after passing matriculation to help his father Abdul Ahad Ganai in his small-scale shuttering business.
“He ensured that he visits the under-construction mosque in our locality every day to assist the locals,” said Ganai.
He said that on Saturday at around 9:30am Ahmad told his mother he will go to the site of the mosque and would be in back in a while.
“When he did not return we thought he might have got busy there only. However, at around 2:00 pm he did come, but dead,” Ahmad’s father said.
The youngest among his three sons, Ganai said Ahmad was very obedient and very much punctual in prayers, his mournful neighbours nodding in agreement.
“I have not seen any boy in our locality who is so pious, sober and helpful,” says Farooq Ahmad, a neighbour.
Ahmad’s mother, Taja Begum is in a state shock.
“She is not eating anything. But only keeps on repeating, O my son, come home, your tea is ready,” says a relative.
