Srinagar 12 March: A complete shutdown on Saturday was observed across the Valley in response to the call given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led Hurriyat Conference against the arrest ‘spree’ and the continued detention of youth and pro-freedom leaders.
Reports said that life remained affected in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley in response to the strike called by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led Hurriyat Conference. All shops, private offices, banks and financial institutions, petrol pumps, business establishments remained closed in response to the strike call. Public transport was also off the roads, while some private vehicles were seen plying on all the major roads and highways across the Valley.
“The political prisoners are being kept in jails without any justification and after quashing of PSA by courts, government invokes second or third PSA orders against them. The life of youth has been turned as hell and every day, dozens are being arrested from every nook and corner of the Valley,” Geelani in a statement issued on Wednesday had said
“We can’t remain silent to the continued oppression for it is criminal besides being against our collective national interest. While hartal is the only way to register our protest, I vehemently urge people to observe a complete strike on March 12 (Saturday) against it,” he had added.
In Srinagar, the capital city, thousands of paramilitary CRPF troops and policemen armed with sophisticated weapons and riot gear guarded the deserted streets, lanes and by lanes to foil any attempt of the people to stage pro-freedom and anti-India demonstrations.
Reports of complete shutdown are also pouring from others districts of the Valley.(KGN+KD)
