Eyewitnesses said that groups of youth this morning took to streets at Main Chowk, Iqbal market, Ashpeer, Sumo Stand and other adjoining areas and staged demonstrations to protest the killing of two militants in the encounter with joint team of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police in a 24-hour gun-battle in Kralteng locality that ended on Sunday.
Chanting “We want freedom,” “Salam-o-Martyrs,” and anti-India slogans, the protesters pelted rocks and stones on the forces. The forces used batons and returned the stones to disperse the stone hurling youth. The ding-dong battles soon spread to other localities of the town.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in the Apple town against the killing fighters of Chinkipora.
All shops, private and government offices, educational and financial institutions, petrol pumps remained closed while skeletal transport plied on the otherwise busy roads of the town.
