New Delhi, October 20 : The anti-Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) caravan was attacked by Hindu extremists as it arrived in New Delhi.
The spokesman for the caravan, Afzal Khan, told media that as they reached New Delhi, a band of Hindu extremists assaulted them, hurling abuses and thrashing the participants. “They also snatched our mike and threw tomatoes and black colour on us,” he added
The caravan is the part of “Save Irom Sharmila Solidarity Campaign” that started from Srinagar on October 16 and will culminate on 27th of this month at Jawhar Lal Nehru hospital in Imphal, Manipur where Irom Sharmila is admitted.
Irom Sharmila, also known as “Iron Lady of Manipur”, is a civil rights and political activist from the Indian state of Manipur. Since November 2, 2000, she has been on hunger strike to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which she blames for violence in Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of India’s northeast. -KMS
