Srinagar, February 07: Complete shutdown was observed in all major cities of Kashmir Valley and towns including Srinagar, today, the call for which was given by the veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader Syed Ali Gilani to draw world attention towards the miserable plight of the political prisoners languishing in jails.
All markets, shopping malls and business centres remained closed in the Valley in response to the call. There was thin attendance at banks and government offices. The work at local courts was adversely affected as the lawyers boycotted the proceedings to express solidarity with the illegally detained Kashmiris. The educational institutions are already closed due to winter vacations.
The strike was also observed in Badgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara, Islamabad and other areas of the occupied territory. Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force personnel were deployed in strength to meet any eventuality.
On the other hand, in the Indian state of Haryana, in yet another incident of violence against the Kashmiri people, particularly students, police abused, thrashed and harassed without any reason a Kashmiri student pursuing engineering at a college in the state.
