The function organized by the Majlis-e-Mushawarat at Eidgah in Shopian was attended by people from different walks of life including Parvez Imroz, Abdul Majeed Zargar, Dr Altaf Hussain, Aasiya Andrabi, Professor Hameeda Nayeem, Khuram Parvez, Ved Bhasin, Zaheer-u-Din, Shakil Qalandar, Parveena Ahangar, Abdul Samad Inqilabi, and Javed Ahmed Mir.
“India has been seeing Kashmir through the security prism. Even the Indian media has been guilty of shielding the perpetrators of war crimes in the Valley,” said senior journalist and noted political commentator, Ved Bhasin.
The Chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Aasiya Andrabi and human rights activists, Parvez Imroz and Khurram Parvez said that India was using rape as a repressive tool in Kashmir while ensuring impunity for the perpetrators of the crime.
APDP Chairperson, Parveena Ahangar appealed civil society of India to take cognizance of the injustices done in Kashmir.
The president of Majlis-e-Mushawarat, Mohammad Shafi Khan expressed deep concern over denial of justice to families of victims.
Shakil Qalandar said that the people of Shopian did not fight for justice for the family of the rape and murder victims but for the protection of the honor and dignity of all the Kashmiri women. Hameeda Nayeem blamed National Conference for bringing miseries to the people.
On May 29, 2009, 17-year-old Aasiya Jan and her pregnant sister-in-law Neelofar, 22, wife of Shakeel Ahmad Ahangar were raped and murdered by men in uniform. The Majlis-e-Mushawarat Shopian spearheaded agitation for over one and half month to seek justice to the rape and murder victims.
