Srinagar, August 04: People staged massive demonstrations in Palhallan area of Baramulla Indian admin Kashmir, against the arrest of a local imam by Indian police.
According to Kashmir Media Service, locals told media men that Indian police personnel and troops appeared in Palhallan area and arrested the Imam, Nazir Ahmmad Tantray.
As the word spread about the arrest of Nazir, who is also a shopkeeper, hundreds of people took to the streets and staged forceful demonstrations against the incident. They blocked the vehicular movement on Srinagar-Baramulla Highway for several hours.
Raising high-pitched anti-India and pro-liberation slogans, the protesters demanded immediate release of the Imam. The police fired several teargas shells to disperse the protesters injuring at least three people.
“We don’t understand when the entire Palhallan area is peaceful, then why police are adamant to spoil the peaceful atmosphere by arresting innocents like Nazir,” said a resident.
The protestors said that the police and troops had let loose a reign of terror in the area and were arresting youth without any reason. “Scores of youth are languishing in the police stations and I can give you proof how police is minting money from the arrested youth,” one of the protestors told media.
On the other hand, the police foiled a protest march of Jammu and Kashmir Local Urban Bodies Employees United Forum in Srinagar.
The employees led by the President of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), Abdul Qayoom Wani, assembled at Press Enclave in Srinagar and marched in a procession towards the Residency Road to press for release of their withheld salaries and wages. However, they were intercepted by the police detaining scores of them including Abdul Qayoom Wani.
