Srinagar Aug 06: Panic gripped in Nowhatta and Khanyar during ‘Qadar’ night when violent protests erupted in these areas. Scores of youth appeared in front of police station Nowhatta and randomly pelted stones on the station and the policemen deployed there. Police used tear smoke shells and pallet guns to disperse the youth. Youth also resorted to stone-pelting in Khanyar area of Srinagar when people were busy in offering prayers during Shab-i-Qadar.
Superintendent of Police City North Tahir Saleem told CNS that youth attacked police station Nowhatta and continuously pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel for 4 hours. “We have not arrested anyone so far. The protestors were dispersed finally and there is calm in the area now,” he said.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that around 11 PM scores of youth attacked the Nowhatta Police station with stones. Police, they said, responded with pallet guns and intercepted the youth in small alleys, triggering violent clashes.
On the eve of Shab-e-Qadr, large contingent of police and CRPF personnel were deployed in and around Nowhatta area. However, youth emerged suddenly and attacked police station Nowhatta.
An eyewitness said that police and CRPF personnel used Pallet guns and deployed police men in civvies to arrest the protesting youth.
During the clashes, various protestors and policemen received injuries, however no one was arrested after clashes. “The clashes triggered chaos in the area.
Police fired teargas shells to quell the protests. The clashes continued from 11 PM to 3 AM,” an eyewitness said.
A police official said these youth had come over from different places of the city and process has been started to identify them.
Meanwhile, youth also pelted stones on CRPF and policemen in Khanyar area who were deployed there in wake of Shab-i-Qadar. However, police charged the protestors with canes and dispersed them. -CNS
