Srinagar: Two militants have been killed during a firefight with government forces in Shupain district, some 49 kms south of Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar.
Sources say a firefight raged in Pinjora village of the district in the afternoon hours after government forces received a tip off about the presence of a guerrilla group.
Sources say three militants were hiding in an orchard and two among them have been killed so far.
Police told media that the two militants killed were identified as Shabbir Gujjar, who hails from mountainous Kellar region in the district and was a Lashkar-e-Toiba commander, and Arshad Ahmad, who is also a local.
The third militant, Waseem Ahmad, also a local, is believed to be trapped inside a shed. “We recovered an SLR and Insas rifle from them,” a police officer said.
Gunshots were being exchanged when the report was being filed.
A police press release here said: “Acting on a specific information, a joint operation was launched by Police, 44-RR and CRPF at Gagloora. The joint party was fired upon by hiding militants. In the exchange of fire two militants have got killed. The identity of killed militants is being ascertained.”
