Srinagar : Thousands of people offered funeral prayers of slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants in South Kashmir’s Shupian, some 49 kms from here, amid a complete shutdown, witnesses and reports said on Friday.
The two militants were killed during a firefight in Gaglora village of Pinjoora area the district on Thursday. The third militant had managed to flee, sources had said.
The slain militants were identified by police as Abid Ahmad Rather of Vehil and Arshad Ahmad Shiekh of Hurpora in the district. The army had described the duo as ‘hardcore’ militants.
Witnesses said that thousands of people offered funeral of militants separately amid pro-freedom, pro-militant and anti-India slogans.
A photo-journalist, who was covering funeral of one of the militants said: “there were thousands of people”.
A complete shutdown is being observed in the town and in various other parts of the district against militant killings, reports said.
Police sources said that they were maintaining vigil and the deployment has been upped in view of yesterday’s protest in which at least nine people were wounded. The protest had erupted after the gunfight was over in the district.
