Srinagar: Protests erupted in Maisuma area on Tuesday after police arrested a father after failing to arrest his son on the charges of stone pelting.
Reports reaching GNS said that a police team conducted a raid at the house of Mohammad Yousuf Dar at Maisuma locality in a bid to arrest his son Ashiq on charges of stone hurling. However, Ashiq gave slip to the police team and managed to escape. Later, police detained Dar and took him to the police station.
Dar’s arrest, reports said, sparked violent anti-police protests.
Scores of youth took to streets and staged demonstrations to protest the alleged police highhandedness. The protesters blocked the road demanding immediate release of Dar.
“Protesters hurled rocks at the police and CRPF. The forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters. This led to outbreak of fierce clashes,” reports said, adding “The traders downed their shutters and ran towards the safer places,”
Meanwhile, a police official said Ashiq was involved in many stone-pelting incidents and was evading arrest. (GNS)
