Srinagar: Gravedigger Atta Muhammad Khan, 73, known for having buried over 200 nameless persons in the territory, is seriously ill and getting weak with every passing day.
A resident of Chahal Bimbyar village in Baramulla district, Atta became a household name in the Valley in 2008 following release of a report on mass graves by the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP).
“He was discharged from a hospital but is still critical,” his son Manzoor Ahmad told media persons. “He is suffering from chest and kidney ailments.”
Khan, basically a farmer, played a significant role in indentifying unmarked graves in the Valley. According to Atta, he has buried 235 bruised, defaced and decomposed bodies, with majority of them being unidentified persons.
