Srinagar: In order to prevent possible outbreak of pro-freedom protests on the 3rd death anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru, authorities have decided to impose restrictions in Old City and in Maisuma area tomorrow on Tuesday.
Official sources told Srinagar-based news agency GNS that the restrictions would be imposed in the areas falling five police stations of Old City including Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal, Nowhatta and Maharaj Gunj. The restrictions shall also be imposed in the jurisdiction of Maisuma police station.
Sources said the Authorities apprehend pro-freedom protests and clashes in parts of Old City and in Maisuma and therefore the decision to impose the curbs was taken. Guru who was hanged in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013 over his alleged role in 2001 Indian Parliament attack without informing his family. He was buried alongside Maqbool Bhat who too was hanged in Tihar on February 11, 1984.
The pro-freedom leaders have already called for a shutdown tomorrow and on February 11th to commemorate the death anniversaries, besides several programmes. In the past also, the Authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in City parts on the death anniversaries of Guru and Maqbool to thwart protests. (GNS)
