Srinagar: A para captain of army was killed in fresh firing at Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) building where an encounter is underway since yesterday evening, police said.
The slain officer was identified as Captain Pawan Kumar of Para 10 regiment, a resident of Jind Haryana.
Two CRPF troopers and a civilian died last night while nine other troopers were injured in the firefight that erupted when militants attacked the building after attacking a convoy of the paramilitary forces on the highway in Pampore area of Kashmir region.
“Eleven CRPF troopers travelling in the bus were injured in the attack. Two of the injured troopers identified as head constable G.D. Bhola Prasad of the 144 Battalion and constable-driver R.K. Raina of the 79 Battalion succumbed to their injuries while other injured are being treated in the hospital,” said an official.
Massive clashes broke out on Sunday in several localities of Pampore area of Pulwama district in Kashmir region where a gunfight is underway between militants and government forces.
Witnesses said that youths ignored the appeals from police to stay away from the site of the gunbattle and staged massive protests in Frestbal, Drangbal, Samboora and other adjoining areas.
Police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the region fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters who hurled rocks at them.
Authorities had issued an advisory last week asking people residing in a two-km radius from the encounter sites to stay indoors.
An army captain, two CRPF troopers and a civilian have so far died while nine troopers have been injured in the firefight that ensued yesterday afternoon after militants took cover inside the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) buildings.
