Srinagar, February 22: Dozens of people were injured when Indian troops and police personnel fired pellets and teargas shells on people, who defying curfew-like restrictions came out to the streets against Indian army operation in Pampore area of Pulwama district.
The demonstrations were held near the site of the encounter between militants and Indian Army in the area. The protesters chanted pro-freedom slogans.
Clashes between protesters and the men in uniform are also going on in Frestabal, Drangbal and Kadlabal areas in Pampore.“It is like 90’s in Pampore. Loud speakers in mosques across the town are playing songs eulogizing militants and Pakistan,” a local Journalist said.
Songs praising and supporting Mujahideen are being played on loud-speakers of the mosques.
He added that smell and smoke of burning tyres has filled the air. “It is becoming extremely difficult to breath,” he added.
Intermittent exchange of fire is heard between the Mujahideen, present inside the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) building, and the Indian Army.
Nine people including two Indian Army Captains and three soldiers, 3 militants, 1 civilian have been killed, in the gunfight, which started on Saturday. At least, 16 Army personnel have sustained injuries.
