Srinagar: A-12-year-old boy lost his right hand when an unexploded tear-gas shell went off in his hands in Rainawari area of Srinagar.
Mohammad Iqbal Qudoosi, an orphan school boy from Rainawari’s KharMohalla, had picked up the unexploded shell near Nowhatta.
People were observing shutdown against the police excesses in the area. The boy’s relatives said Nowhatta locality houses Iqbal’s school and the school was closed due to tension in the area.
The boy was returning home with the unexploded tear-gas shell in his hand.The shell exploded when the boy was playing with it. He was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.
“The doctors in the hospital referred him to Bone and Joint Hospital,” one of the relatives said.
The boy underwent an emergency surgery in the late afternoon and his hand was amputated wrist downwards.
Iqbal was only eight year old when he lost his father four years ago. Ghulam Rasool Qudoosi, Iqbal’s father, had died of serious illness in 2012.
