Srinagar: A gunfight erupted in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Sunday evening, police said.
During a siege and search operation in the village Buchroo Indian troops exchanged heavy fire with militants. Reportedly a militant Dawood Sheikh has been killed and another one is still giving fight, one trooper has been also injured in the firefight.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kulgam, Mumtaz Ahmad said that Dawood Sheikh was killed in the initial round of gunfire exchanged between militants and forces in Buchroo village of the district.
Sheikh, a resident of Qaimoh village of the district, was active since past three years.
“He was a most wanted militant,” said Ahmad.
Meanwhile, youth assembled near encounter site and pelted stones on the joint team of ndian forces. The protesting youth also shouted pro-freedom slogans. When reports last came in the situation was tense in the area.
